What Are Online Income Streams?

Online income streams are simply ways of making money via the internet. There are so many possibilities for this through sharing your interests, knowledge, creations, or life experiences with others, in ways that are enjoyable for you. 

You could have just one income stream, or choose to create multiple income streams over time. Your venture can be as small or large scale as you like. 

Online income streams also offer a way of generating semi-passive income. Typically, you’re creating things once that can then keep selling over and over, with little to no maintenance. This eventually means more spaciousness and time freedom for you, because you’re no longer on the hamster wheel of forever trading your time for money.

Let’s take a look at some common ways that people build online income streams:

Create useful, relaxing, fun, or inspiring digital products. This could include making any kind of ebooks, templates, music or other audio, sheet music, printable journals, printable artwork…the list is endless!

Sell physical products you believe in. You don’t need to handle shipping or inventory yourself for this: you could use a service like Teemill or Printful to print your images or text on clothing and accessories when orders come in (this is called print-on-demand), or use Amazon KDP to print hardcopies of your book. You could even create an online store that sells others’ products relevant to your interest (this is called dropshipping). With these options there’s no upfront investment in stock, because products are only created or shipped when someone places an order.

Recommend products, tools, or programs that you love for a commission. This is called affiliate marketing. It’s how I got started and it’s far more rewarding and doable than it may sound! Affiliate marketing can be integrated into any content you might create around your interests. For example, you could tell people about a product you love within the theme of a broader email, website page, blog, or YouTube channel. You’re simply signposting people in an organic way toward things that you’ve found helpful, and being paid by the relevant company when a sale is made through your link.

Communicate a passion to others via a YouTube channel. It can take some time for a YouTube channel to make money through ad revenue, but in the meantime it can be used as a creative way to resonate with people and to point them to your own/other’s products. Video content can be put together in any way that you enjoy and feel comfortable with. 

Support others’ learning through online course creation. Share your knowledge, skills, and unique insights through a prerecorded, carefully crafted course, which you can then sell multiple times to people without needing to trade time for money through working with them face-to-face (unless you want to!). 

As an example of the possibilities, here’s my mentor Nick, who took his passion for full-time travel with his young family and created multiple income streams around the lifestyle they love (all while actually living it!).

Hi, I’m Sophie, and not so long ago, my working life had a constant backdrop of unease. My energy was wearing thin, I yearned for more creativity in my days, and I felt stuck with a salary that didn’t reflect my care and dedication.

With things only getting worse rather than better, I realised I had to make a change for the sake of my wellbeing and financial future. And so I began a journey into making money online.

In this article, I’ll share how building online income streams allowed me to go from years of working against my needs, to actually feeling excited about a working life that feels good and aligns with who I am. 

We’ll take a look at the ins and outs, and should you feel inspired to start your own journey, you’ll have a clear path forward by the end of this article.

Until I learned how to make money online, I was worn-out from feelings of struggle and unease in my working life. 

I’ve worked in caring professions for many years, and there are things I love about supporting people and building relationships in this way. But as an introvert - and I've recently discovered I'm neurodivergent too - I find lots of face-to-face contact hours, phone calls, and unpredictability very draining and often anxiety-raising. 

Even though I’ve always had some awareness of my needs, I still had an expectation of myself that I should be able to manage my work like ‘everyone else’. I felt like there was something wrong with me for being exhausted and for thinking ‘if only it was possible to do all this for just one hour a day’! 

I tried to help myself along the way with self-care techniques and therapy which had supported me a lot in the past, but in terms of my work feelings, nothing ever shifted.

Eventually, I didn’t have the energy to work full-time hours, and I was forced to recognise that this way of living wasn’t in any way sustainable for my wellbeing or financial future.

Having already tried different kinds of jobs only to get the same results, I knew I needed a completely alternative way of generating income and I started to research ways to make money online. 

I spent hours searching Google and YouTube, hoping for the right thing to jump out at me. I was fascinated but at the same time it was overwhelming and I kept finding myself back to square one with no idea where to start.

I was then fortunate enough to stumble upon a holistic roadmap for creating online income streams that made all of my research fall into place. It provided the heart-centred, step-by-step, expert guidance for success that I needed, and everything inside me said that I was on the right path. 

It was only once I starting building online income streams with this newfound knowledge, and feeling energy and joy return to my life, that it really hit me:

For years I believed I needed to change myself so that I could feel better about work, when all along it was my work that needed changing to support who I am.

What started out as a means to reduce my work hours and improve my finances, became a source of fulfilment that I’d never anticipated! Building online income streams that I love and that align with my needs has finally allowed me to experience feelings of ease and harmony in my working life (something I never thought was possible for me).  

It’s now a true pleasure to share what I’ve learned with others who are feeling stuck, just like I was. So let’s begin by looking at what online income streams are, and methods that people are already using to earn a living outside of the traditional 9 to 5.

Part of the reason I got stuck when researching how to make money online is that I didn’t know which online income streams would be viable for me - both personally and financially. 

At one point in a bid to try something, I had a go at reselling using Amazon FBA, because it seemed relatively straightforward and financially viable. But I soon found that I couldn’t do something day-in, day-out that to me was so tedious and meaningless (have you ever had that experience where every part of you is screaming ‘no!’ and you just can’t do it?!).

I quickly learned that I needed more than just ‘any way to make money’ - I needed to build a working life that was enjoyable and that I could feel proud of if it was going to be sustainable.

But at the same time, I was worried that the more enjoyable kinds of income streams would require luck to be financially viable, especially with so many people already selling stuff online, and that I’d probably need to spend time building an audience on social media too (something I really didn’t want to do!).

It was only when I eventually found some in-depth training about online income streams that I was introduced to the wonders of online marketing. The word ‘marketing’ had been a complete turn-off for me in the past: I associated it with all the irritating and intrusive adverts that we’re bombarded with every day! So I was extremely surprised to discover that: 

1) Marketing can be unintrusive, authentic, and rooted in integrity. 

2) It’s the easiest way to remove uncertainties about making online income viable, and isn’t as costly as you might think. 

3) It’s a very enjoyable, creative, and meaningful process when you're offering something that feels good for both yourself and others.

The approach that I learned is a proven strategy called Authority Marketing, which offers a holistic, flexible, and effective framework for building online income streams from the ground up.

How to Make it All Work (Without Social Media or Luck!)

The Pros & Cons of Online Income Streams

Here is a realistic list of some pros and cons to help you decide whether making money online feels right for you.

Let’s start with the pros:

You can love what you do! Online income streams make it possible to build your own unique working life that is tailored to you. A working life that allows you to be fully yourself at all stages of the process. Loving what you do is also important because your enjoyment and fun will ensure sustainability.

A work-life rhythm that supports your energy and needs. This is huge for wellbeing. All new ventures involve dedication and graft at the start, but you can go at your own pace and build a working life that fits your needs. I initially wanted to do something that was as passive as possible because I was worn-out, but like me, you may find that your energy for work dramatically increases once you’re doing something you’re excited about and that feels good for you.

Create your own work environment. You can create an environment that is nurturing for you, where you feel comfortable, at ease, and able to focus. 

Creative flexibility. This is one of my favourite things. When I started out, I knew I wanted to use more creativity in my work but I didn’t know how yet, and I also didn’t want the pressure to ‘be creative’ constantly! Fortunately, online income streams can grow with you as you grow into your own brand and your ideas. So you can be as creative as you like according to your needs as you go along. I love that the possibilities for all kinds of creativity are limitless in this way of working.

Passive scalability. Most people love the fact that with the right systems in place, the information, products, or services that you’re offering can be created one time and then continue to sell in the background time and time again. 

No need for real time interaction if that’s not your thing. Online income streams offer the ability to connect with people as much or as little as you like, and without having to respond to them instantly. Of course, it’s still possible to have time-for-money services like coaching or teaching as an online income stream if that’s something you enjoy. But it’s certainly not necessary, and many people (like me, at least for now!) choose not to do real-time face-to-face work. 

And now let’s take a look at the cons:

The learning curve. In the beginning, the amount of new information to take-in and implement can feel overwhelming. It’s not that it’s difficult, it’s just a lot to process at first! But the good news is that it can all be taken one step at a time in a way that feels manageable. 

Not a quick fix. I think we all know deep down that quick fixes rarely last and don’t provide the answers to what we truly want and need. It will take some time and dedication to create something sustainable and lucrative, but it’s something that you can start building (and loving!) TODAY alongside whatever you’re already doing in life. There is also training and support available should you wish to fast-track your progress. 

It can be lonely without a community. Even though I lean towards doing my own thing, we all need support sometimes. If you feel inspired to invest in training after watching the free video series, you will have a respectful community on hand that you can engage with as much as you like along your journey. It can be really helpful to know that there are plenty of people available for any questions or whenever you need a bit of encouragement.

Variable start-up costs. This is of course something completely within your control and depends on your resources and what you want to achieve. If you’re in no rush and are willing to build momentum slowly and organically, it’s possible to set-up an online income stream with little to no investment. But if you’re serious about replacing (or sky-rocketing!) your current income or having a lucrative side hustle, then you might consider investing in yourself with training that will guide you every step from start to finish. You can choose a level of support to suit your personal and financial needs. Ultimately, this could save you so much time and money by avoiding lots of trial-and-error and accelerating your progress. Everyone has their own journey and needs, but for me, getting the right training and mentoring for myself is the best investment I’ve ever made.
